How to resolve Android designer instability and slowness?

When starting a new project in Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2015 with Xamarin Android I am running into problems relating to the Android Designer. The following actions take an excessive amount of time to complete (10-30s) or simply freeze the application.

1. Double clicking an axml file in the Solution Explorer.
2. Clicking the Source tab from the Designer tab for an axml.
3. Clicking the Designer tab from the Source tab for an axml.
4. Changing a property in the Properties tab in the Designer tab for an axml then clicking another property.
5. Changing or adding valid code in the Source tab for an axml and then saving.
6. Creating an axml file.
7. Clicking on an element in the Designer tab for an axml.
8. Making changes to any values xml file.

In addition, Design/Source tabs will randomly disappear while editing an axml and actions relating to the Android Designer get progressively slower as more changes are saved in the same session.
