On Mac, I checked for updates, and started downloading the updates. Somewhere I clicked on other window and back on Xamarin Studio. Updates window is nowhere to be seen and not able to anything on Xamarin Studio.
It is kind of painful when you see the code and not able to do anything about it .. and in these moments of solitude you feel like your creative juices are flowing and get lot of ideas to implement and still you can't touch the code ... hope you can imagine my situation :)
Why don't we do update check and updates as an independent app and run it outside Xamarin Studio. We can ask users to save their work and close Xamarin Studio. Make this independent app check for Xamarin Studio instance if available and prompt until all Xamarin studios windows are closed. If while download/update is happening, if user tries to open Xamarin Studio, we can have a flag that throws an message like 'Wait till Xamarin updates are complete'. This restraint is better than the earlier one :)
